ENGINEERING GUIDE

CIP and SIP have different acceptance boundaries

Cleaning removes soil; an in-place sterilization process is a separate, validated duty.

Keep the terms precise

CIP describes cleaning through the installed flow path without routine dismantling of the included equipment. It does not automatically establish a sterile system. Disinfection and sterilization have distinct objectives and acceptance requirements.

The equipment boundary matters

A system designed for cleaning may not be suitable for steam, sterile barriers or the pressure and temperature conditions of a proposed SIP process. Check the equipment manufacturer’s limitations and all connected seals, valves and instruments.

Write separate requirements

For an aseptic application, document the cleaning scope and the separate sterilization/aseptic-system requirements with qualified specialists. Do not infer aseptic performance from a CIP skid specification or a hot-water cleaning step.
